Special Collections policy

  • Special Collections include manuscripts, old and rare print  items, dated before 1900, as well as other material that needs special treatment for various reasons. They are housed in the Special Collections Room on the 2nd floor, which is closed to the public.
  • Interested users are requested to apply for these materials only  during the morning, 8.30-15.30.
  • A request form should be completed by the users the day before their visit, citing the full details of  maximum five (5) items
  • The  request form  should be sent by email to phil(at)lib.uoa.gr, or  submitted in print to  the Circulation Desk. 
  • Items found in digital form on the web, and there is no need for a user to handle in physical format, are not available to the users for study. The web link of these items are given in the bibliographic records.
  • Users should hand in their academic or other id card  to the Circulation Desk and study the rare item at a special table nearby, under the supervision of the staff.
  • In case of a manuscript or book dated before 1850 the purpose of study shoud be mentioned in the request form which has to be approved by the Head of the Library.
  • Users studing items from Special Collections should handle them with due care and respect , while the staff  has to examine the items given to the users
  • Only making photos of this material is allowed.  Photocopyng and digital scanning are not allowed. [5-12-2019]

1. Users should follow the instructions of the staff  and conform to the Library regulations concerning Special Collections.

2. Users may carry only a pencil, notepad, laptop, mobile phone and/or a camera.

4. Use of pens, paperclips or  sharp objects and stickers as well as keeping notes on these items, are strictly not allowed.

5. Readers are requested to avoid, if possible, touching the print or  illustrated part of the pages, pressing books with tight and rigid binding, folding and creasing pages.
