Special Collections
The collections of old and rare material of the former Spoudastiria/Libraries of the School of Philosophy, were merged and moved to the newbuilt Library of the School of Philosophy in the summer of 2019. These collections come from purchases and donations since the foundation of the university.
Among the oldest editions of the Library are the Parekvolai in Homer's Iliad by Eustathius Archibishop of Thessaloniki, published in two volumes in Rome in 1542, the Synopsis of Histories beginning with the creation of the world and up to the reign of Isaac Komnenos collected by Cyrus George of Kedrinos, published in Basel, Switzerland by the German philologist Guilielmus Xylander (1532-1576) and by the publisher Joannes Oporinus, in 1566 and M. Francesco Sansovino's Dell'historia universale dell'origine et imperio de Turchi printed in Venice by the printer Francesco Rampazetto in 1564.
There are also rare editions from the Greek printing houses of Venice (Andreas Ioulianos, Antonios Vortolis, Nikolaos Glykys, Sandos Pekora), of Moschopolis, Iasi, Bucharest, Vienna (Georgios Ventottis, Greek Typography of Ioannou Snirer, Io. Barthol. Svekios), of Constantinople (Patriarchic Printing House), etc. but also from other famous printing houses in Europe, such as the Didot family in Paris.
Most of the titles of the Special Collections are cataloged and can be searched in the OPAC and Unified Search. A small section of old and rare books do not appear in the catalog for technical reasons.
